Native American history initiatives at SPOHP have focused on tribal history in the Southeast, archiving hundreds of interviews with the Catawba, Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek, Lumbee, Seminole, and Pamunkey since 1967.
Archival Collections
- Oral history transcripts (opens in new tab) for the Native American collections, including the Lumbee, Cherokee, Catawba, and more, are available online at the University of Florida Digital Collections (opens in new tab).
- Audio, photo and additional media for the Native American History Project are currently undergoing processing, and interview audio is available to access through the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program offices. Please contact us (opens in new tab) for more information.
Ongoing Research
For the past three years, SPOHP has worked in partnership with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians (opens in new tab) in Atmore, Alabama, focusing on tribal history initiatives.
From 2014-2019, SPOHP processed several hundred tapes from the records of attorney Hugh Rozelle, focusing on the case for Poarch federal recognition. In 2020, we are finding ways to share the knowledge gathered on sustaining this decades long collaboration including a roundtable proposal at the 2020 Oral History Association Conference.
