{"id":988,"date":"2018-01-06T12:33:15","date_gmt":"2018-01-06T17:33:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/portal.clas.ufl.edu\/writing--wdkb-v1\/?p=988"},"modified":"2020-06-03T14:48:09","modified_gmt":"2020-06-03T18:48:09","slug":"teaching-research-writing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/portal.clas.ufl.edu\/writing--wdkb-v1\/teacher\/teaching-research-writing\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching Research Writing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-465\" src=\"https:\/\/portal.clas.ufl.edu\/writing--wdkb-v1\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/199\/343px-Haeckel_Muscinae-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>Discipline-specific prose is not simply about format: it also reflects and embodies ways of thinking within the discipline. Teachers, then, must be very clear about what they want when they say \u201cI wish students could write better\u201d. Do you really mean the nuts-and-bolts of effective writing or do you mean you wish students thought more like psychologists (or physicists or philosophers)? And there is a difference! For example, you will meet students who are instinctively inclined to divvy up the universe in a way that is natural to your field, and they will still be inexperienced, ineffective writers. If you find yourself saying \u201cyes, that\u2019s the right idea, but why did you write it like that??!!\u201d, then y<span style=\"font-size: 1rem\">ou are really focusing on writing. If, on the other hand, you find yourself exclaiming \u201cUgh &#8212; what on earth is this about? This has nothing to do with the assignment!!\u201d, then you are bemoaning lack of discipline-specific thinking. When the writing is clear, but the ideas are not right, it is a thinking problem, not a composition problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Writing assignments can address both writing problems and thinking problems, which is what makes discipline-specific writing such a fine exercise for advanced students. Writing research reports is a particularly good way of doing this because the student is forced from the beginning to contend with their discipline\u2019s way of attending to the universe.<\/p>\n<p>Research reports are the official documentation of research results. Seems obvious enough, but research writing entails one very important assumption that you\u2019ll have to make decisions about: where will the data come from? Having students conduct their own research means you must provide them guidance for the whole experience of being student-researchers, from proposing answerable questions to designing methods constrained by the time frame of the class to writing the report. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Advantages: This can be a great choice if the whole class is about writing research reports or you wish to add writing to a methods class. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">produces high student motivation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">produces high student involvement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">produces more genuine discipline-specific learning<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Disadvantages: This can be a poor choice if you don\u2019t have time (or desire) to help students set up an entire research project.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">produces high student stress<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">produces significantly more work for teacher<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">teacher must develop a meta-vocabulary about the discipline &#8212; i.e., in addition to \u201cwhat\u201d (content), you also have to add \u201cwhy\u201d and \u201chow\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Students will have to understand how to ask an answerable question using valid methods in the time allotted for class. If students are led through this process carefully, then they can often get through data collection very quickly. However, the teacher will have to set it up so that methods are tightly controlled, and only allow time-intensive approaches (qualitative, interview-based, some simulations) to go ahead with special permission or not at all.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Students will need training and access to research tools<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019ll assume that you are not teaching a lab class; if this is the case, all the \u201ctools\u201d needed have been provided! For the rest of us, conducting original research means that a student will have to perform some kind of methodology. Students will also need training in choosing methods, choosing variations within methods, and training\/support in how to do the method itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be reasonable with environmental constraints<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Time &#8212; how much time will students have to gather data? In a single semester, it\u2019s usually about a week, maximum. Students will have to ask a question and design a method that can be accomplished in a week\u2019s time. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Our students can usually gather 50-300 survey responses in 3 days, but qualitative research takes much longer to both gather and analyze, so should be reserved for those students advanced enough to do the work (I\u2019ve met only a handful of undergraduates who are intellectually ready to perform thematic analyses, and most classes, whether skill or content, do not leave enough time to teach this).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It goes without saying that cross-sectional designs will be the only options here; there isn\u2019t time for anything longitudinal! <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Money &#8212; will it cost the student money? If students need to make copies or buy something, was that cost figured into the class and explained at the beginning of the semester? <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Location &#8212; if students need to be physically present for any part of the method, have you worked this into the schedule, including weather-induced variations?<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provide instructions for how to do observations, too, whether participant-observer or counting instances or visual inspections.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Limit the methods students can use to reduce the burden on you<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since you\u2019ll have to train students to do the work, limit the possibilities, e.g., surveys or interviews or observations. Keep in mind this is an exercise in disciplinary thinking, not a graduate degree. The goal is for students to make all the decisions someone in your field makes, from question to data collection to communication. They do not need to become expert researchers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For every allowable method, offer some training in how to do it. For less experienced students (which is most undergraduates), review their method and FIX it so that the data will work better. This is not coddling or cheating. Instead, it supports the goal of ensuring that students have a disciplinary experience: they cannot write a discussion section if there are no patterns in their data. Your expertise supports this goal.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Constrain the length and complexity of what is allowed. I\u2019ve learned the hard way that smart, ambitious students will unintentionally create huge workloads for themselves by designing a really good 40 question survey that includes both closed and open questions. Even with modern software, that\u2019s a lot of data to sift through for a class paper. Analyzing that much material also shifts the focus too much towards being a researcher when we want the focus on being a writer. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s hard to do this because we know that a solid paper usually has a ton of data behind it. If it helps, construct a scenario in which a shorter study makes more sense, e.g. a pilot study, feasibility study, or focus group. Or, use a scenario where highly specific information is needed, such as feedback from a specific neighborhood about a particular construction issue or convenience sampling only the patients who come to the office during 2 weeks of flu season.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Students must conduct ethical research<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">IRB &#8212; Officially, research that is conducted for a class is considered non-IRB controlled b\/c the results won\u2019t be publicly disseminated, though UF has moved to a stance where ALL research, even that not intended for publication, should have IRB approval. Check with your institution to find out. You\u2019ll then have to make a decision about whether to pursue IRB approval for each project in the class. If you intend to have students publish or share information in any way that is construed as \u201cpublic\u201d, then you are ethically obligated to seek IRB approval. If there is no sharing component, then IRB approval is less necessary (though in many institutions, strongly preferred). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nonetheless, our personal position is that students should not use this as an excuse to conduct research that would not be IRB-exempt or fast-tracked. This means that <\/span><b>teachers must act as the IRB board<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, and explain IRB to students, provide the categories, and insist students do IRB-exempt or fast-tracked research. Students often cannot simply ask people the kinds of questions for which they want answers nor can they experiment upon the public; instead, they have to find ways of asking \u2018around\u2019 the situations or go for a less incendiary topic. For example, students who want to investigate trauma, such as sexual abuse, cannot do so directly. Nor should they: there are strict protocols on such research that include availability of counseling. However, students can find out \u201cabout\u201d traumatic topics that do not question participants directly on whether they have been personally affected.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teach and require consent forms &#8212; I find this the single most common piece of ethical research practice left out of coursework. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If a student wants to work in ANY capacity with a minor, they MUST get parental consent. Or they are provided with a controlled research process, so that question\/method are already taken care of. There are lots of options with this approach, and this kind of research writing can be added to any course. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Option 1: Provide the data set<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In this option, the teacher provides a data set with its accompanying method and research question. Students then write the rest of the research paper, but do not have to perform the research.This eliminates virtually all the challenges associated with conducting original research, though it also reduces the student\u2019s experience in thinking like a disciplinary practitioner. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">provide students a set of readings with the information they\u2019ll need to use for the introduction and discussion sections. This may be all the reading they use or they can be required to do some additional literature searching. This decision will depend on why you\u2019re doing this assignment &#8212; the more information students are provided, the more it becomes ONLY about writing, which might be advantageous.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To increase the disciplinary-thinking, provide raw data (or data after the basic set of stats have been run). Students will then have to figure out what the data patterns are in addition to figuring out what they mean for the research question. They\u2019ll also have to create figures which is an excellent way of demonstrating how your field divvies up the world. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This will entail time and training, so allocate at least one class period for how data is analyzed and another for either doing the work in-class or sharing data analysis performed as homework.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The biggest disadvantage to this approach is coming up with a data set that has not been published or figuring out a way to prevent students from finding data that has been published. If you have access to unpublished data, this would be a great source of authentic outcomes for students to use and to prevent cheating. Another alternative is to make up a data set based on a selection of real studies. Colleagues who come out of the humanities tend to have less problem with this approach than colleagues in the sciences for whom \u201cmaking up data\u201d is a loathsome breach of ethics. I tend to agree with the science-minded on this one, but also see that using a fabricated data set purely as a training tool is a possible solution. Another option is to use the data from a NON-open-access article in a more obscure journal, preferably one that your institution\u2019s library doesn\u2019t have a subscription to. The data is broken down into its raw form if possible or in lists, and this strategy seems to make finding the original more difficult. (Note: I\u2019ve been amazed at how much energy certain students will put into finding an original article for the purpose of cheating&#8230;if only that effort were diverted into doing the work!)<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Option 2: Do a \u201cfollow up\u201d study<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yet another strategy is to use a published article, then <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">pre-plan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the data-gathering method &#8212; the assignment is pitched as a follow-up to some aspect of the original article. Students read the original article, collect new data (but do not have to come up with a method), then have to write up a brief report using the new data while referencing the original (you can also include a few more sources so they have to practice synthesizing new info). Some ideas for selecting articles:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The original article is easily extended by demographics &#8212; age, gender, ethnicity, or geography. For example, a research article on some behavior in a different country, region, or state &#8212; find out some aspect in a US context or apply to a college-aged population. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The original is easily extended by adding a quantitative or qualitative component. For example, any research where something is done or provided <\/span><b><i>to<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> people (from a health intervention to push notifications on an app) can be extended by investigating how people feel about the activity. Virtually any piece of qualitative research can be investigated through a survey on some component.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><b>Option 3: Same start, different finish<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In this option, students are provided the Introductory material, then asked to finish with something original of their own. This option is good for encouraging disciplinary thinking while constraining the literacy experiences a good deal because students don\u2019t invest a lot of time in library research. It\u2019s a good choice for design-oriented fields such as landscape architecture, urban planning, engineering, and computer sciences. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The most controlled variation involves finding or writing the Introductory material &#8212; it doesn\u2019t have to be long, but it should clearly set up what the student is supposed to do. This schedule does not include peer review or additional time for writing an IRB application (even if for class project). If you include an IRB-like document (sometimes called a prospectus), then add at least one week, and schedule it for Week 3, after method has been figured out. For greater impact, add an additional week, and include a brief introductory literature review (more like a problem statement) using 3-5 sources. This would make the project 10 weeks long.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><b>Scaffolding Chunks<\/b><\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Finding and reading literature precedes anything to do with writing.\n<ul>\n<li>Teach analysis and synthesis.<\/li>\n<li>You don&#8217;t have to teach everything to do with the literature in one week. Teach search, reading, analysis and synthesis separately, with time to practice each.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The better the method, the better the results. Better results makes the whole paper far more writeable. So help students develop and refine their method so that it works.<\/li>\n<li>The Discussion cannot be written until Results have been analyzed. Sometimes, the Introduction will have to be revised to better reflect the Results. Thus, write the middle parts (Methods, Results) first. Students know this information, and they are relatively easy to write because they are so conventionalized with strict expectations associated with each. Both sections also embody disciplinary thinking better than any other section of the paper, so represent a terrific opportunity to teach students how to think in the field.<\/li>\n<li>Write the Introduction and Discussion last.
