They are very good for most STEM fields, especially the applied fields such as medicine. Most students pursuing undergraduate degrees in medical-related fields aren\u2019t intending on becoming researchers; most will become practitioners. And practitioners read more review or review-like papers (such as clinical guidelines and CMEs) than they do original research. Reviews also work well for teaching so-called &#8220;academic prose&#8221; to design fields, business students, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A review paper teaches students about original research without performing that task itself. Because they encounter literature with many different types of method design, they gain some skill in analysis. Reviews are also excellent for teaching the points of view endemic to a given discipline. Unlike a research report, which is an exercise in generating data within a given field, reviews provide a more top-down perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The disadvantage to a review paper is that it is <\/span><b><i>harder<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to write than a research report. A lot harder. The research report is so highly conventionalized that it is relatively simple for students to write good reports, and I\u2019ve had students report back to me their writing had been deemed \u201celegant\u201d simply for having followed the standard IMRD template. Reviews, on the other hand, look suspiciously like the \u201cresearch papers\u201d or &#8220;lit reviews&#8221; that students were taught to write which mostly amounted to a serialized summation, an annotated bibliography in paragraphs. In fact, reviews are evaluative syntheses crafted to reflect a point of view. Stand-alone reviews are usually written by experienced researchers with the maturity required to analyze, synthesize, and evaluate disciplinary knowledge. Many journals publish by invitation only.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Still, review-type writing is an excellent strategy for teaching disciplinary thinking and communication.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We recommend three major steps take place before students are set free to write a review. This process was figured out over many (often painful) years of grading semi-plagiarized or non-synthesized papers. I truly believe that if you follow a plan very much like what we lay out, you\u2019ll have a better time grading papers than if you do not. The reading load is what makes writing reviews such a challenge. It is not enough to help students find sources on a topic. You have to teach them to READ in their field the way a disciplinary practitioner reads. This entails teaching students the kinds of genres they will encounter, the purpose of each genre, and strategies for understanding each. The medical field has done a particularly good job of modeling this because of the whole \u201cuser\u2019s guide to the medical literature\u201d movement that resulted in evidence-based medicine. (I\u2019ll use the med field as an example because it\u2019s easy to do so!) But every field has a body of literature its practitioners read. That literature is divided into types; the literature is evaluated for quality across those types. Students need to know this information. Call it something fun! &#8212; \u201cthe anatomy and physiology of the medical lit\u201d or \u201cthe topography of reading in geology\u201d or \u201ctaking a spin through the physics literature\u201d or \u201ca guided tour of the literature in urban planning\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:<\/strong> We know there is variation in how even highly standardized texts get written. However, students will learn more effectively if you choose example texts that are classically, conventionally composed. Once they learn to read for standard structure, you can show them variations.<\/p>\n<h4>Big ways to think about the literature<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here are some typical ways that disciplinary literature gets divvied up.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Scholarly versus Trade<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I\u2019ll venture a personal rant here: unless you only teach students going into grad school, most of them will not read solely the scholarly lit; they read the trade lit in their field. Even if you don\u2019t want them to use the trade lit in your class, teach them about it so they know what it is, and how to use it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is easy: go to any professional organization, then to its publications. There will be an academic journal or two (maybe a lot depending on the organization), then there will be the trade literature &#8212; the periodicals, magazines, newsletters, and websites used by professionals in their every day work. Sometimes there will also be a public-facing publication. SHOW these to students. Examine the features of each (public facing and trade publications are quite different, but students mistake public for trade because of topics &#8212; you have to show them the difference). Talk about how to use them, how to choose among them.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Original Research versus Secondary Research (and maybe case studies)<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is the realm of research reports versus reviews. <\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For research, include hierarchies of evidence, both the pros and cons<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teach IMRD and what each section accomplishes (a functional approach that works across disciplines)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For reviews, teach content and criteria-driven approaches (e.g. state of the art reviews versus systematic\/meta-analyses) &#8212; for more advanced students, explain the pros\/cons of each<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Criteria-driven reviews employ an additional level of filtering that is most often related to methodology, e.g. only including RCTs in the final data set<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thus, they are often written in IMRD format though no actual intervention was performed (which confuses the heck out of students)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The inclusion\/exclusion criteria should be explicit and robust (cogent, sensible, motivated)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Content-driven reviews are beholden only to the POV of the writer<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most commonly employed when there is not enough research available to systematize<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also selected when the POV is specific or idiosyncratic<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">E.g., not just the side effects of a medication, but the side effects most likely to result in patient non-compliance<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Depending on field, case studies may be best as their own category as they are neither experimental at any level (thus not research) but a real-world, one-time event (therefore not a review)<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pedagogically very important (e.g. case-based learning)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whole areas of practice may be devoted to this such as Failure Analysis in engineering <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Design fields rely heavily on case studies and they are not considered a lesser form of evidence the way they are in evidence-based medicine<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Practitioner Guidelines<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These can be clinical guidelines in medicine, standards and codes in engineering, statutes and laws in lawyering<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s kind of fun to look at codes of ethics in professional organizations, too<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">May also include key reference texts practitioners use<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Select a topic in your field with enough research history to have multiple genres associated with it. Then, show students examples of each &#8212; e.g., this is how asthma looks at the case report level, cohort study level, rct level, systematic review, meta-analysis. Let them read each kind and talk about the experience. This is hard work for them, but a guided tour through the lit will make BOTH your lives way easier. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> Another lesson we learned the hard way: choose articles that aren\u2019t too difficult to understand when teaching students how to read\/use the literature. You can still choose something fun or interesting, but students need papers that aren\u2019t so content-crazy that they cannot focus on structure and form. For example, in the med sciences classes, we use mobile health technology as the key concept for finding articles. First, students do not struggle to understand how text messaging or video works as a piece of communication technology. Because the tech itself is fairly limiting, the interventions are not difficult to follow. Because text messaging is cheap, it\u2019s frequently used with conditions requiring frequent monitoring or self-management, which include the \u201cbig\u201d pathologies that most students have some familiarity with (e.g., diabetes, obesity, depression, asthma, addiction). Because the technology is still relatively new to medical use but feels very familiar to students, they are comfortable having an opinion, so more willing to risk making judgements. Break the assignments into smaller tasks. The question then became, what are the tasks? The single biggest challenge to writing a review paper is crafting a point of view from which to write as this forms the basis for everything from article selection to analysis to the subheadings used. Forming a good POV is not a writing problem: it\u2019s a thinking problem. So we practice a controlled version of the process before we ask students to write independently. Writing\/thinking skills include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Analysis (a literacy\/reading skill)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Synthesis (mostly a writing skill as it\u2019s driven by POV, which is a thinking problem)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Format (especially, headings + citation style)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Analysis<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Analysis precedes synthesis; reading precedes analysis. Choose 3-4 articles from the major genres in your field. Teach students how to read them. Then, have students analyze the articles for different points of view, e.g., what does this article have to say about patients, physicians, costs, etc.? What is the analytical strategy? How does it define some major concept? Students learn to read both whole texts and to read for specific bits of information, so-called \u201copportunistic\u201d reading.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If students take notes in bulleted lists instead of sentences, it takes care of unintentional plagiarism. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Synthesis<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Having analyzed the articles, provide pre-planned headings, e.g. \u201cPros\/cons of X for patients\u201d, \u201cPros\/cons of X for Providers\u201d, and \u201cPros\/cons of X for administrators\u201d. The student\u2019s task is to analyze for that information and synthesize a statement about each, using all the readings. If students created lists, then when they work from the list, they will not plagiarize the original. Since technical terms do not have synonyms, we\u2019re not worried about them using those terms: they are supposed to, it\u2019s what practitioners do. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Perform the synthesis in 2 parts. During part one, students generate content and mark where citations need to go. (Label articles A, B, C and have them use those shortcuts.) In part 2, students will revise, and add in the correct discipline-specific format.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Format<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provide a style guide and a model for how the paper should look. Insist on correct style. Decide whether you will allow software that generates bibliographies\/citations. These perspectives categorize the field into everything from its sub-disciplines to its methodology to its content and practice. Practitioners are recognized because they \u201cthink\/act like a [insert discipline here]\u201d. Newcomers are legitimized as they become conversant in these categories. An easy example is the clinical process in medicine: symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, prognosis. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Provide a map of the endemic categories to review writers and practice forming questions &#8212; this will help them begin to ask and answer questions as does someone in your discipline. The map below is one example &#8212; we use this with undergrads in the health sciences, and it has helped them form better questions, and hence search the literature and analyze it better. The second was constructed to show that the humanities have just as much \u201cstructure\u201d as the sciences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[insert focus your review paper map]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">[insert endemic humanities map]<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Emergent<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For more advanced writers or to push creativity, encourage \u201cemergent\u201d categories. One definition of emergent thinking is the novel understanding that emerges when someone has had a long time to dwell with information &#8212; a eureka moment when a different way of seeing the material suddenly emerges. Sometimes emergent analyses are moments of idiosyncratic brilliance; sometimes they attain the status of memes, such as the zombification that swept across disciplines as a metaphor for everything from food production to supply chain management to ways of characterizing Alzheimer\u2019s patients [link to each]. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Emergent POVs are occasionally truly novel, representing a re-visioning of a field, akin to a paradigm shift or new theoretical model. More commonly, emergent POVs are borrowings across disciplines &#8212; applying a principle in physics to mental phenomenon or a concept from semiotics to economics. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s hard to predict when an emergent POV will show up, but using them with advanced students can produce interesting results and help students loosen up thinking. This skill is increasingly valued as nearly everyone has to work across disciplines, with different audiences, and via new technologies. Students can take a current paper and imagine it from a different perspective or through the lens of a different discipline. Or, play with more extreme ideas, e.g. what would this thing look like if it took place in an aquarium or a different period in history?<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>Practice thinking before writing<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Use excerpts or abstracts to practice thinking in a discipline before students begin writing in a discipline. Find 4-5 papers on the same topic, then ask students to explore various ways of approaching what seems like the same information. For example, a handful of abstracts on medications for ADHD very quickly reveals many of the ways the medical world divvies up the world: amphetamine vs non-amphetamine, degrees of side effects, side effects according to category (physiological, physical, behavioral, academic, social), side effects from patients or caregivers experience, age, gender, environment, compliance. If you\u2019re assigning a longer paper, add about a week for every 5 pages, and make sure to assign due dates to drafts\/sections. If you don\u2019t, you\u2019re going to get papers written the night before they are due, and they will suck.
